Our Needs

The Santa Clarita Valley is a growing community with increasing demands for water to support residential, commercial, and industrial activities. As we look to the future, it is crucial to understand and address both our current and projected water needs to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for all.

Current Water Needs

  • Population Growth: The Santa Clarita Valley has experienced significant population growth over the last few decades, which directly impacts water demand. With more residents moving into the area, the need for an adequate and reliable water supply becomes more important.

  • Residential Use: Interior and landscaping water use by homes constitutes a large portion of our current demand. Ensuring that residents have access to clean and safe water is a top priority.

  • Commercial and Industrial Use: Businesses and industries in Santa Clarita also rely heavily on water for their operations. Supporting local economic growth requires maintaining a stable water supply that meets the needs of these sectors.

  • Agricultural Use: Although not as large as in the past, local agriculture requires water. Agricultural water demand must be taken into account to ensure no shortages occur for our community as a whole.

Future Water Needs

  • Sustainable Growth: As the Santa Clarita Valley continues to grow, we must plan for a sustainable and resilient water supply portfolio. This includes expanding water infrastructure to meet increased demand and investing in projects and programs that enhance water use efficiency.

  • Climate Change and Drought: Climate change poses significant challenges, including more frequent and severe periods. Preparing for these conditions requires a proactive approach to water management, including multiple sources of supply, programs that store water during wet years for use in dry years, and timely updates of water supply projections.

  • Environmental Protection: Protecting our natural water resources, such as rivers and aquifers, is essential for long-term sustainability. Implementing measures to prevent contamination and overuse will help preserve these resources.

  • Advanced Technologies: Utilizing advanced water treatment methods ensures our water supply continues to be safe. Recycling adds to our existing sources of supply by treating and reusing wastewater. Innovations such as automated meter reading, and smart irrigation systems will play a critical role in finetuning and stretching our water supplies to meet future needs.

My Plan to Fulfill Our Water Needs

Fully Utilizing Our Water Supply Sources:

  • Diversification: Promoting the use of multiple water sources, in combination with water banking and conservation, to ensure a reliable supply.

  • Infrastructure Development: Timely investing in new infrastructure projects to expand distribution, recycling and storage to most cost-effectively and efficiently meet growing demands.

Enhancing Water Conservation:

  • Public Awareness: Promoting outreach campaigns to encourage water-saving practices by residents and businesses.

  • Incentives: Providing incentives for the adoption of water-efficient appliances and landscaping.

Addressing Climate Change Impacts:

  • Drought Preparedness: Developing comprehensive drought management plans that include water conservation, banked water and alternative water sources.

  • Resilience Building: Planning for and implementing projects and programs to better withstand the impacts of climate change and ensure reliable water availability during extreme weather events.

Protecting Water Quality:

  • Regular Monitoring: Implementing rigorous water quality monitoring programs to detect and address contaminants promptly.

  • Advanced Treatment: Utilizing cutting-edge water treatment technologies, in particular those addressing contaminated groundwater, to ensure the highest standards of water quality for all users.

Community Engagement and Transparency:

  • Open Communication: Maintaining transparency by regularly updating the community on water issues, initiatives and programs.

  • Public Participation: Encouraging community involvement in water management decisions through public meetings and forums.

By addressing both current and future water needs with a comprehensive and proactive approach, we can ensure the Santa Clarita Valley has a sustainable and reliable water supply for generations to come. My extensive experience in water resource management equips me to effectively participate in these efforts and ensure our community's water needs are met now and in the future. Thank you for your support.
